How to Stretch an Image in Photoshop: 3 Ways (and a No-Install Shortcut)

ImageStretcher

Stretch an image in Photoshop three ways — Free Transform, Image Size unlocked, Content-Aware Scale — then remap the same file in the browser when you do not want to install PS. Free online shortcut; no upload.

People who type how to stretch an image in photoshop usually already know the file must change width and height on purpose. They are not looking for a gentle uniform enlarge. They want one axis longer than the other, or a named pixel box that the camera never shot. Photoshop can do that three different ways. ImageStretcher’s home canvas can do the same remap when you do not want to open a desktop install.

Those paths are not identical. Free Transform and an unlocked Image Size dialogue rematch existing pixels onto a new box. Content-Aware Scale tries to protect the subject while the background yields. A browser stretcher stays honest about what it is: independent width and height, preview first, download when the frame matches the brief.

Free Transform: drag the box

Open the image as a layer (convert Background to a layer if Photoshop complains). Choose Edit → Free Transform, or press the shortcut your version uses. In the options bar, unlock the chain that keeps width and height proportional. Drag a side handle to widen or a top/bottom handle to lengthen. Circles become ovals; type follows the photo. That warp is the job when a banner needs a wider frame. It is a defect when a face or a wordmark must stay true — see when a stretch warps a face or type.

Commit with Enter or the checkmark. Export the format your next step needs. This is the closest mental model to unlocking Width and Height on a web stretcher.

Image Size with the chain unlocked

Image → Image Size is the dialogue people reach when they think in pixels or percentages. Uncheck Constrain Aspect Ratio (or click the chain icon so it opens). Type the destination width and height separately, keep Resample on when you are changing pixel count, and confirm. The file becomes that box. Softness still follows enlarge; warp still follows a mismatched ratio. The dialogue does not invent missing detail.

If you only needed a wider frame and not a Photoshop project, the sibling how-to stretch an image horizontally covers the axis-only case without the desktop UI.

Content-Aware Scale: protect the subject when it works

Edit → Content-Aware Scale asks Photoshop to stretch the canvas while preferring to leave faces and hard subjects alone. Protect areas with an alpha channel when your version supports it. Preview carefully: logos, small type, and already-soft portraits can still smear. When the brief is “larger frame, same face, new margins,” pad or an AI image expander may be the cleaner story than forcing CAS. When the brief is “this bitmap must become exactly these pixels,” Free Transform or unlocked Image Size stay the honest remap.

GIMP users searching a parallel path land on a much smaller query; the same three ideas map to Scale Tool with the aspect lock off. Canva’s side-handle workflow is spelled out in how to stretch an image in Canva.

Stretch the same file in the browser

Skip the install when you only need a remapped download.

  1. Open the ImageStretcher home tool (photos can start on the photo stretcher).
  2. Drop the image, or paste a capture from the clipboard.
  3. Set the destination width and height, or unlock Free aspect and stretch one axis.
  4. Watch faces, circles, and type in the preview before you commit.
  5. Download PNG, JPEG, or WebP for the next upload.

Ready to try the file without opening Photoshop? Use the free stretcher, set the box, and export when the preview matches the brief.
