Fit a 16:9 Image into a 9:16 Frame
ImageStretcher
A 1920×1080 still does not contain a 1080×1920 frame. Choose stretch, crop, or AI expand, then export the vertical size you actually need.
A 16:9 image is wider than it is tall. A 9:16 frame is taller than it is wide. Those are reciprocals, not the same picture rotated. Rotating 1920×1080 gives you 1080×1920 of sideways video. Fitting the picture into a vertical slot means choosing which pixels survive, which get remapped, or which get invented.
The usual pair in this catalog is 1920×1080 in, and 1080×1920 out. Instagram Story, Reels, TikTok’s vertical video, and YouTube Shorts all use that output size here. The choice of method does not change with the logo on the app. It changes with whether the subject can warp.
The arithmetic, once
Source: 1920×1080. Target: 1080×1920.
| Method | Width | Height | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stretch both axes | Scale 1080/1920 = 0.5625 | Scale 1920/1080 = 1.778 | The subject gets narrow and the scene gets tall. Every original edge remains. |
| Center crop | Keep 608 pixels of the 1920 (about) | Keep all 1080, then you still only have 1080 of the 1920 you need | A 9:16 window inside 16:9 is 608×1080. You then scale that window up to 1080×1920. The sides of the original are gone. The result is softer than a native vertical photo. |
| Crop a shorter window and accept bars | Any | Less than 1920 | The frame is not full. Most Story layouts crop the bars off anyway. |
| AI expand | Original width stays put inside a taller canvas | New pixels above and below | The subject’s shape stays. The new region is generated, and that step sends a temporary smaller copy. |
The crop window’s width is height × 9/16. For a 1080-tall source, 1080 × 9/16 = 607.5, so about 608 pixels. You cannot crop a 1920×1080 file down to 1080×1920 without scaling up, because the source is only 1080 pixels tall and the target is 1920. Anyone who says “just crop it to Stories” is also scaling. Name that scale so the softness is not a surprise.
Which method matches the picture
Use stretch when the image has no face and no rigid logo, and the brief is a full frame: a texture, a pattern, a landscape where the horizon can sit differently, a meme that wants the warp. Unlock the lock on the image stretcher, set 1080 and 1920, and look. A factor of 0.56 on width and 1.78 on height is a strong pull. If the preview looks like a funhouse mirror, stop. The general rule is in how to stretch an image without cropping.
Use crop when a person, a product label, or a line of type must keep its shape, and you can live with losing the left and right of the widescreen frame. Open crop image, set the 9:16 ratio, place the window on the subject, and export. Then scale to 1080×1920 if the crop came out smaller. The sides you did not include are gone on purpose.
Use AI expand when the subject must stay undistorted and you also need the scene to continue above and below. That is AI Image Expander. The original 16:9 stays in the middle. The tool asks for new pixels in the extra vertical space. It is the path that does not squash the person and does not throw away the group standing at the edges. It is also the path that leaves the device for one request.
Do this on the stretcher when stretch is the choice
- Open the home tool or a vertical landing such as TikTok or Instagram.
- Drop the 1920×1080 file. Confirm the starting size. A phone photo is often already vertical, and this whole problem does not apply.
- Turn the aspect lock off.
- Set width to 1080 and height to 1920, or pick the Story, Reels, or Shorts card. Those cards are 1080×1920 in the catalog. YouTube’s 1280×720 thumbnail is still 16:9. Do not pick it for this job.
- Look at the preview at phone width, not zoomed out to a postage stamp. The distortion hides when the preview is tiny and shows up in the upload.
- Download. PNG if you will edit again. JPEG or WebP for the upload.
If you have twenty widescreen stills that can all tolerate the same pull, batch applies 1080×1920 to the queue. Check the filmstrip. One frame with a face will look worse than the landscapes around it.
Do this when you refuse the warp
Crop:
- Open crop image and load the 16:9 file.
- Choose 9:16 and slide the window onto the subject. You are keeping roughly the middle 608 pixels of a 1920-wide frame if you use the full height.
- Export. If the result is 608×1080, scale it to 1080×1920 with the aspect lock on. That second step is a resize. Both axes move by the same factor, about 1.78. The shape you cropped stays.
Expand:
- Open AI Image Expander.
- Set the target to 9:16 or to 1080×1920 if the control offers that frame.
- Generate. A temporary smaller copy is sent so the edges can be filled. The original file on disk stays where it was.
- Download and, if the generator’s output size is not exactly 1080×1920, finish on the stretcher with the lock on so you only scale.
Vertical frames that are not 9:16
Not every tall slot is 1080×1920.
- Instagram’s portrait post in this catalog is 1080×1350, which is 4:5, not 9:16. A Story export is 570 pixels too tall for that post.
- Tumblr’s portrait photo template is 1024×1536, a 2:3 frame. The image post template is 1280×1920, which is 2:3 as well, at a different size.
- A passport frame is a print box, not a Story. US passport here is 600×600. The 35×45 mm frame is 413×531. Those rows are on the passport size chart.
Match both numbers. “Vertical” is not a size.
A small test you can do with one file
Take a 1920×1080 export you already have. Make three copies of the decision, not of the master:
- Stretch to 1080×1920 and look at anything circular. Clocks, plates, and pupils become ovals. If that is unacceptable, this copy is done.
- Crop 9:16 from the center and scale up. Check that the subject is inside the window. The softness is the scale from 1080 to 1920 on the short side of the crop.
- If both fail, expand. Compare the new edge with the original scene. Keep the result only if the invented region does not contradict the photo.
You do not need a bench of fifty images to see which branch you are on. One file with a face and one file without will disagree, and that disagreement is the point of having three tools.
